Coorg Open & Handicap Golf Tournament

Golf Open Championship, first played in 1906, is traditionally held in October every year.  The tournament brings in golfers primarily from Coorg, Mysore, and Bangalore; golfers from various states and countries also participate from time to time, indulging in three days of fun, revelry, and competitive golf.

Veteran members reminisce that, “here is a club that seems to have been preserved in time. Sitting on the rocks overlooking the browns of the golf course one can view the same scene that has played itself over a hundred years. The hardy buffalo grass on the slopes can trace their roots as far back or longer in time; cattle wander on the fairways, mowing and fertilizing them, have been doing so for over a hundred years. For this is a natural course - not here the fancy manicured Bermuda grass, pop up sprinklers, and artificial aprons, fringes, and roughs of the modern course. This is pure unadulterated golf as it was in 1906. Today the horse carriage and the Ford Model T that had brought the golfers up for the weekend have been replaced by sedans and SUVs; the heavy mashed and niblicks with graphite and tungsten; but the browns at the end of the fairway, the lantana lying in wait for the missed shot off the first tee, and the scene of caddies who are as adept at spotting the ball as they are at shooing the foraging cattle around the fairway, are the same that Mr. Pearse, Mr. Newcome, and Mr. Wood encountered on their weekend golf a hundred years ago”.
